Since auto insurance became available, the only specific living creatures that were explicitly covered were humans. However, that is beginning to change, according to a recent report filed by NBC 10 in Rhode Island. The report states that Progressive Auto Insurance is beginning to offer coverage for pets injured in auto accidents as well.“”Effective Sept. 6, any of our customers who has collision coverage on their policy, we would cover their dog or cat if they were injured in an accident,” Progressive spokesman Dave Fernandez explained.
There will be no extra cost for the coverage. Progressive is rolling it into new and existing policies.
Dogs and cats will be covered up to $500. There is no deductible, and the coverage is automatic for Progressive policy holders.
Many insurers, including Progressive, already cover pets if they’re in someone else’s car. The difference now is that Progressive will cover the pet in your car.”
While this clearly shows that pets are becoming increasingly important to Americans in all walks of life, it still may not cover your needs if you are injured in an auto accident.
