Autopsy results show that indie musician Carter Albrecht was intoxicated at three times the legal limit when he attempted to kick-in his girlfriend’s neighbor’s door and ended up being shot in the head.
While the police think the alcohol in his system (his blood alcohol level was .29, almost four times the legal limit) had much to do with the rage that ended in him attempting to kick in a door, his girlfriend, Ryann Rathbone, feels that his not acting like himself has more to do with taking Chantix, the prescription anti-smoking medication. They had both been taking Chantix for about a week when the incident and his death occurred. Both had also experienced “Chantix Dreams” or vivid sleep experiences.
The makers of Chantix say that the drug doesn’t show a causal relationship between taking Chantix and experiencing feelings of rage in clinical studies. The drug works by preventing nicotine from sticking to the receptors in one’s brain that trigger pleasure.
Doctors at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas think the rage may have been due to the alcohol as Mr. Albrecht was supposedly a casual drinker. The level of alcohol in his blood would trigger irrational reactions if the person with that blood was a casual drinker.
