According to the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, December 9, 2007, David Garcia Hernandez drove his Ford pickup off the side of the road and into a muddy ditch. A couple pulled over to try to help him and allowed him to use his cell phone. However, when another motorist stopped by and advised that 911 had been called and police were on there way, Hernandez became angry and threatened to kill the couple and said he wanted to get away from the scene. Sgt. Bob Berry reported that the couple became scared and tried to drive away when Hernandez managed to cling to their car door burning the man’s arm with his cigarette. As the couple drove off, Hernandez managed to hold onto the door until about a block down when he either fell or dropped off the vehicle landing on the road where he was hit by another car. Hernandez was taken to Conroe Regional Medical Center where he later died.
Sgt. Berry reports that investigators do not understand why Hernandez became agitated after learning that police were going to arrive at the scene. Hernandez had no warrants for his arrest and did not appear to have any trouble with the law.
