According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), cable network Home Shopping Network (HSN) has agreed to pay $875,000 as a settlement for charges that it failed to report serious personal injuries from pressure cookers sold on its shopping channel in a timely manner.
From September of 2001 until approximately October of 2004, at least 25 incidents were reported to HSN by consumers who had lids on Welbilt electronic cookers open prematurely while contents were under pressure. However, the network did not report the incidents until February of 2005.
Manufacturers, distributors, and retailers are required by federal law to report information immediately to the CPSC about products which could create a substantial personal injury risk to the public.
